Blondie and Read

Saga, Volume 5

Saga, Volume 5 - Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples Per usual, just simply awesome.

The Sandman: Overture

The Sandman: Overture - J.H. Williams III, Neil Gaiman The artwork is absolutely insane! The creative juxtaposition of the panels and, sometimes, lack of panels is genius. This was my first Gaiman novel and I have to say that I am not disappointed at all. I loved every single second of this psychedelic, poetic, (more words) trade. I'm definitely going to be continuing this series!

Heck. Yes.

Suspect

Suspect - Robert Crais It was ok. It's not a book I would have picked up for myself, which is the magic of doing book discussions at the library. I'm also not a big mystery reader. It seemed to be missing the suspense I'm used to, and the darkness I love. It's one of those books that doesn't really make you think and you can read it before bed to clear your mind without any worries about being kept up.

Again, it was ok, but not for me.

Ms. Marvel, Vol. 2: Generation Why

Ms. Marvel, Vol. 2: Generation Why - Jacob Wyatt, G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona I don't know, man. I just wasn't feeling this one. I can't really put my finger on why either. There was development of the Inventor. There were things that could have been awesome, but I just wasn't in the mood. I'm guessing that's it. Maybe I'll try when I'm in the mood for Ms. Marvel, but right now I just wasn't feelin' it.

Fates and Furies: A Novel

Fates and Furies: A Novel - Lauren Groff This was just.... a chore to get through. Holy purple prose, batman. The "fates" section was so hard to get me to pick up and actually care about any of the characters. The "furies" section started to be interesting, but it was just too little too late. If I didn't have to read this book for a book club, I definitely would have DNF'd it. It has writing a la Jonathan Franzen. I've read one Franzen book (The Corrections) and DNF'd less than half way through. I just couldn't take it - much like this one. Purple prose makes me purple barf.

Dislike.

Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: In Pursuit of Flight

Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: In Pursuit of Flight - Dexter Soy, Emma Ríos, Kelly Sue DeConnick This was ok. It definitely wasn't my favorite. It had an OK message and an OK storyline. If you're trying to get someone into TPB, this is not the one to do it. Probably won't hook them.

Black-Eyed Susans: A Novel of Suspense

Black-Eyed Susans: A Novel of Suspense - Julia Heaberlin I actually really enjoyed the slow build for the suspense. I just wish there was more of an explanation for the ending, though it could go on to be a second book. (I don't want it to be..) It's not that I didn't understand what happened, I just wanted a touch more.

Well written and a good suspense book. I feel like this is closer to what The Good Girl by Mary Kubica was trying to do... Heaberlin did it better and less predictable.

Red Queen

Red Queen - Victoria Aveyard This was like a mix of Red Rising by Pierce Brown and Young Elites by Marie Lu. This fell short for me... it just read like too many other things I've read. If I didn't read so much dystopian on YA, then this might be a really cool book. But, I do. So, this wasn't. Sorry Aveyard, but I will probably not continue with this series.

Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob

Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob - Dick Lehr, Gerard O'Neill Great research. Awesome insight. Saw the movie and wanted so much more! Fascinating to see just how corrupt the law enforcement really was. The rise and fall of the Bulger/Flemmi empire.

Saga, Volume 3

Saga, Volume 3 - Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples I laughed out loud several times. 1. Author barfing on baby Hazel. 2. Lying Cat in general. I can't think of others off the top of my head (I'm at work right now). But yes. Loved every second of it and am hitting myself for not continuing the series earlier. What was I thinking!?

Trees Volume 1

Trees Volume 1 - Warren Ellis, Jason Howard Interesting concept. Lots and lots of set-up. Not sure if I'm as excited to continue with this series.... and just the fact that I'm questioning it, makes me know that I'm not.

The Young Elites

The Young Elites - Marie Lu actual rating: 3.5

Didn't really need two voice actors. Lannon Killea barely spoke, so I don't really think he was necessary. Lu wrote a great, dark, twisty tale. It was great! Much better than Legend, and I'm excited to read the second one.

Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal

Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal - G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona I thought this was great. It has great commentary about looks, religion, fitting in, and just being a teenager. And, of course, super heroes. I approve! Excited to continue the series.

The Heart Goes Last

The Heart Goes Last - Margaret Atwood 3.5 stars.

Margaret Atwood is a genius. Awesome concept. Beautifully mastered science fiction with sociology experimentation and the realistic element. The ending was kinda "hmmm".. otherwise it would definitely be 4 stars.

Attachments

Attachments - Rainbow Rowell Rowell has just an amazing way with dialogue. Seeing as how most of the book was through emails... it was just awesome. Just what I needed.

Armada

Armada - Ernest Cline 3/3.5

Awesome. Super nerdy. There were a lot more references in this one that I didn't quite "get". I still enjoyed the story though.
